Hearty congratulations to our Community Engagement Department, including Key Change co-hosts Andrea Fellows Fineberg and Anna Garcia, and producer-extraordinaire Andrea Klunder!
The opera, with music by Chandler Carter and Libretto by Diana Solomon-Glover, focuses on the real life story of Fannie Lou Hamer, a Black woman born and raised in Mississippi who becomes a beacon and a leader for securing the right to vote for Black Americans.
For Solomon-Glover, who studied radio/TV/film at Northwestern and has performed in operas and musical theater for decades — and whose mother was an opera singer, as well — music has been a powerful tool for resistance, togetherness and joy.
The one-act opera is composed by Chandler Carter with libretto by Diana Solomon-Glover. Under development since 2017, the piece is commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera and its Opera for All Voices (OFAV) consortium partners.
